Russell is a young kitten who came to the SPCA with a large number of kittens and cats rescued from a cat colony in need. He has spent the last few weeks in a foster home growing up and getting healthy plus working on his socialization to people. Being born in a colony, for the first several weeks of his life Doug was outside and not used to being handled so was quite scared when he came in. He's come a long way in a foster home and has started to show his curious, friendly, and playful side but may still be nervous and anxious in a new environment initially. A really loud, busy home may be a bit too scary for him. He will need a cat savvy home willing to continue getting him used to new things slowly. Given lots of love and attention in his new home he will certainly blossom into a wonderful, loving companion who will bring joy and companionship for many years to come. Ask staff for tips on kitten socialization and we'll be happy to help. Doug can't wait to find his fur-ever family! The colony Doug came from had some parasites and bacteria which he had to be treated for when he came in. He also has been exposed to Calici, an upper respiratory virus in cats, that causes symptoms like eye and nose discharge, sneezing, congestion, and oral ulcers. Luckily Russell only had very mild symptoms when he came in and recovered quickly in a healthy environment. There is the possibility that Russell could carry the virus with him for life and potentially shed it intermittently. Because it is potentially contagious to other cats it is recommended he be kept as indoor only and either be the only cat in the home or go to a home with a cat who has already been exposed to the virus. Felines in the home should be kept up to date with regular vaccinations. A behaviour counselling session with our Adoption Staff is necessary before adopting any animal.

Piper was surrendered to the Kamloops & District SPCA because his previous guardian could no longer afford to care for him. Piper is looking for an experienced dog owner and a home with no small animals, children or livestock. He has a strong dislike for strangers and is very protective; so he may come across as aggressive towards new people when in certain situations. Piper is currently on medication to help manage this within the shelter environment. Piper has facial nerve paralysis however, this condition does not have a prescribed treatment except for supportive care. An important part of caring for a dog with facial paralysis is avoiding the complications related to dry eye and the inability to blink. Currently, Piper is able to produce tears, but cannot make his right eye blink. Artificial tears might be needed down the road to help keep the affected cornea lubricated. This does mean his guardian(s) may need to be administering drops several times daily to prevent infection and corneal ulceration. Piper gets easily over excited and tends to jump up. He needs a guardian(s) that can provide lots of exercise and outings. Some of his favourite outings include going for car rides! He also loves toys, and you can always find him with a toy stuffie in his mouth. Piper appears to be fully house-trained but may initially want to mark his territory when in new environments. He is very strong on leash, so this is something his new guardian(s) needs to be prepared to work on. Piper's had issues with other male dogs in the past but has lived peacefully with medium-large female dogs. **Due to COVID-19 we've made changes to our adoption process. To adopt:1.
