Lake Country woman had payment taken after requesting deferral

Frustrated with ICBC

UPDATE: 2:30 p.m.

MJ Todd says she has heard from ICBC concerning payments taken from her account after the corporation agreed to defer them.

Todd told Castanet the insurance corporation has apologized for the mix up and has agreed to give her the full 90-day deferral.

She says they will be returning her payments, and also making good on the NSF fees changed by her financial institution.

ORIGINAL STORY: 5 a.m.

A Lake Country woman is frustrated with ICBC after her monthly insurance payment was taken from her account after the corporation agreed to defer the payment.

MJ Todd is a student at UBC Okanagan, and says she contacted ICBC March 20 to have her March payment deferred.

"I did this before ICBC announced it would grant a three-month deferral," Todd told Castanet News.

But, prior to that, she said the insurance corporation was offering a deferral to the end of the month, which she took advantage of.

She received an email confirmation later that day which stated, in part, "the change has been made per your request."

"It (payment) was supposed to come out on the 25th, and deferred to (March) 31st," she says.

However, Todd says, despite the confirmation, the payment was taken out on the 25th.

The account was dry and a NSF charge was also tacked on.

"They didn't do what they were supposed to do," said Todd, who says she has her car up for sale to get money just to make ends meet.

"This isn't right," she added.

ICBC says on its website it is experiencing very high call volumes amid the coronavirus pandemic. Those seeking a deferral should start with the insurer's online web tool.
