A guide to hosting a virtual Easter 'egg hunt'

A virtual Easter egg hunt

The Easter long weekend is just around the corner but with the COVID-19 pandemic, some traditions may be put on hold, to flatten the curve.

But having an Easter egg hunt for kids could still be possible, by hosting your very own virtual Easter egg hunt during these "cooped up" times.

The Photo Gallery Egg Hunt

A parent from each family in the neighbourhood can place a series of eggs around the town and take a picture of them. The egg doesn't need to remain at the location, just enough time for you to take a quick snap.

The egg should be visible in the image but hidden in plain sight. This could be in a bed of flowers, taped to the house, or perched up against the mailbox.

Collect all the images and create a gallery in a word document or photo app of your choice. The kids then can spread to zoom in or drag to pan out for viewing options of the hidden egg.

Once all the eggs are located, they win a prize. This is great for all ages, as everyone wins.

The Camera and Clues Egg Hunt

Each parent must choose a series of places they will hide the eggs in their respective homes and yards. To make the hunt fair, the eggs must all be hidden in the same places at each residence.

Email the list of locations to all participants, provide a printable list of clues, and choose a time when the children can start their hunt.

On the day of the event, print the sheet of clues and give it to the kids, along with a smartphone camera.

When an egg is found, each participant takes a photo, then move onto the next clue.

When they have collected all the images of the eggs, they will reply to the original email chain by uploading their images. The first person to send the email with all of the correct eggs wins.

Extended families can get involved by giving the kids extra clues and encouragement using a video calling app.

Social Distancing Egg Hunt

Similar to the hearts taped on windows, print off an Easter egg colouring sheet and get the kids around the neighbourhood to colour and post them in the window.

Connect with other parents who want to participate and have the eggs displayed by a certain date.

Have the kids take photos of their findings and upload them to the text or email chain, by Easter day. The kid with the most eggs sent in, wins a prize.

As for the prize? Fill a basket with candy, an online gift card, a colouring book, and more. Each parent can contribute to the basket.

Will you be having a virtual Easter egg hunt? Send us a snap or let us know what you'll be doing this year by emailing [email protected].
