Kelowna mother says cyclist spat on her 14-month-old daughter

Child spat on by cyclist

A Kelowna woman was left shaken after a cyclist allegedly spit on her child as they were walking along Okanagan Lake in the Mission area Tuesday.

At about 3:30 p.m., Katherine, who asked that her last name not be used, was walking with her mother and her 14-month-old daughter on the walking path near Rotary Beach when a cyclist approached them.

“We kind of moved over for him and he looked right at us and spit at us,” Katherine said. “That was the only interaction we had, he didn't say anything.”

The bulk of the spit landed on Katherine's young daughter, who was in a stroller at the time.

“It mostly hit her sleeve and the collar of her shirt, and hopefully it didn't her face. I don't know really know for sure,” she said.

The man kept riding, and while she wished she had taken a photo, Katherine said she was just in shock.

“Any day, spitting on someone is rude, but during a pandemic, for somebody to spit on you, it was just unbelievable,” she said, adding that both her and her mother agreed the man had intended to hit them.

Katherine called police, who told her an assault charge could be laid against the man, but without a photo of the man, or video of the incident, it would be tough to find him.

“Kelowna RCMP made patrols of the area but were unable to locate the man,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Kelowna RCMP. “Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP or CrimeStoppers.”

Katherine said the man appeared to be in his 60s, with a slim build and a “salt and pepper” beard and goatee. He was wearing sunglasses and a hat at the time.

“We'll definitely not be going back there for any walk,” Katherine said. “It's nice to get out and see the scenery, but it's not worth that.”
