American white pelicans make a stop-over in Kelowna

Rare sight in Okanagan

A rare sight on Okanagan Lake this week.

Cara Christiansen, a KGH nurse living on Poplar Point Drive, said "yesterday (Monday) morning when I woke up and looked out to the lake in Sutherland Bay I was greeted by four lovely American white pelicans!"

This particular breed of pelican is quite rare and is considered an "at-risk species" in British Columbia.

The birds have one nesting colony in our province located at Stum Lake in the Chilcotin region, 70 kilometres west of Williams Lake. The park is closed every year from March 1 to August 31 due to the pelicans nesting there. The majestic birds, spotted on Okanagan Lake this week, are most likely returning from a winter down south which included a pit stop in Kelowna.

Christiansen tells Castanet, "they were the talk of the morning and many people pulled over to admire them. I thought it may be a nice welcomed change of sight to our current events."
