The flock of Great Blue Herons make their way back to Vernon

The herons return

Vernon's batch of Great Blue Herons have found their way back to Vernon again for another season. The large birds have found their favourite nesting point in the city, which is a grove of tall trees in the north end. The area backs up right next to Rita Bos' land, who has been observing these birds for years.

"I love to come out here and watch these birds prepare their nests and fly around the property," she says. "I always take my camera with me to try and get the perfect shot."

Bos not only observes these birds, but she also advocates for them. She has seen developers that have breached the wildlife conduct rules in the past, and she hopes to educate the public on how to treat the herons.

"I recently got an approval from the Vernon Advisory Committee to install six signs to put on the property," says Bos. "They will be used as an interpretive tool for educational purposes, as well as guidelines on how to protect and respect their habitats."

You can see the herons when you drive along 24 Street between 48 Avenue and 53 Avenue.
