Vernon's Ken Holland named to Hockey Hall of Fame

Holland into Hall of Fame

Vernon's Ken Holland has been named to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Holland, who began his hockey career with the Vernon Vikings as a teenager in 1973 and went on to build an NHL dynasty with the Detroit Red Wings, was named to the 2020 class of inductees on Wednesday.

The Vernon native is currently general manager of the Edmonton Oilers.

His induction to the hall of fame is in the builder category.

He was GM of the Red Wings from 1997 to 2019, leading the team to four Stanley Cups.

“I am incredibly humbled by this honour,” Holland told NHL.com.

“I'm born and raised in Vernon, B.C., I still go back there in the summer, I have a house there. I am very proud of British Columbia and very proud of Vernon," Holland said last year, when he was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Holland earned a reputation as one of the most successful general managers in the NHL.

He's joined in this year’s hall of fame class by Jarome Iginla, Marian Hossa, Kevin Lowe, Kim St-Pierre and Doug Wilson.
