Over 20,000 pounds of discarded metal removed from Bull Mtn.

20k lbs of metal hauled out

Don Journeay has been busy the past few years trying to return Bull Mountain (formerly Crystal Mountain) to its former place as a winter and summer playground.

Journeay, who now owns the lease on the ski hill, has been cleaning up not only the hill, but the area around it.

Recently, with the assistance of ABC Recycling, 20,080 pounds of metal was removed from the hill.

Journeay says it was enough to completely fill an 80-yard bin truck

"It was just the last four years of cleaning up," he said.

"When the mountain was abandoned, they dumped a lot of stuff up here on this property. And, I've cleaned up along the roads over the years..

"People dump stuff everywhere."

Journeay says what began as just a small metal pile four years ago continued to grow as they added to it.

"We've been picking it up as we see it. Going down Jackpine Road and around there, if we see somebody has thrown out a washing machine or something, we throw it on the truck, bring it up here and throw it on the metal pile.."

He says over the years he has brought everything from old burned out vehicles, appliances and springs from burned up mattresses and couches.
