'Justice for Mona' protests planned for Kelowna, Lower Mainland

'Justice for Mona' protests

A series of protests are planned for next week, including in Kelowna, in support of the UBCO student caught on camera being dragged down a hallway and having her head pushed to the ground by a Mountie’s boot.

A “Justice for Mona” event is planned to take place at Kelowna’s Stuart Park on July 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. Similar protests will take place at the same time in Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey.

“Show your support and protest for better wellness checks and accountability for police misconduct,” reads a poster circulating on social media.

Attendees are being asked to wear masks due to the pandemic.

Mona Wang launched a lawsuit naming Const. Lacey Browning back in March, alleging she was assaulted during a wellness check. The case became national news last month when surveillance footage of the aftermath of the wellness check was made public through the lawsuit.

This week, the Southeast District RCMP commander officer offered Wang an apology for the incident and promised a thorough investigation.

A petition calling for the termination of Const. Browning has now been signed by nearly 360,000 people across the country.
