Why do we allow this?

Why so many people are upset with the government about giving up their rifles instead of asking the government to enforce stricter penalties for crimes?

People say they need them for hunting, but off the record say I want to defend myself in a crisis.

I feel that if the penalties were harsher and had more impact, we would see crime go down and fewer people wanting to own these types of guns.

Criminals have so many rights these days that it is so wrong for the rest of society. Prisoners used to have to work hard in jail to earn their keep, not easy street.  From what I hear and understand, they are privy to education with no work to receive these benefits.

I don't see how having a high-powered rifle would have helped me when a lady that I have seen in this community for years with a shopping cart, broke into my home. While I was at work, she filled my reusable grocery bags with meat that I have worked very hard for. When I showed the picture of the lady to the police, I was told the picture was not clear enough and nothing would be done. Free shopping spree for her.

On the night of March 26 or early 27th, my truck was stolen from outside my house. The police knocked on my door around 3:30 a.m. to ask me where I usually park my truck, and I pointed to where it usually is. It wasn't there.

The officer told me my truck was in the Global gym parking lot, burned. I am sure nobody in my area even knew this happened. It was not on the news and no officer went around asking my neighbours if they had cameras or if they heard anything.

The officer mentioned that the truck was probably used for a crime. I received a file number from the officer and was told to contact ICBC. After about a week, I called the officer and asked what was happening with the file and he seemed to be taken back that I would ask.

He asked If I had been in touch with ICBC. I said yes, but was wondering what they were doing to find out how and why my truck was stolen and burned a block away from my property. The officer said he would check with the investigating officer and get back to me.

I read daily on Castanet of people getting ripped off and nothing being done. Kelowna is building this city so fast and not backing it with resources to monitor and keep our community safe. Why as a society are we allowing this to happen?
