Concerning the current debate on police brutality in Canada, I am astonished by the naiveté of many Canadians who believe that all is right in our fair land.
I lived in Toronto in the late 1970s. The police there were feared and hated by the public for their racism and homophobia.
I lived in downtown Toronto. Bath raids and racist beatings were all too common. You never ever saw a policeman walking on foot. Police were two to a car. They loved the doughnut shop and were eager to entrap or cause trouble whenever they could.
It seems that little has changed. Apart from the horrifying spectacle of a militarized police force corralling the public in Toronto in 2010 during the G-20 summit, and various police killings and attacks since in many of our major cities right up to present day, I do not think that Canada can just lean back and blame everything on our neighbours to the south.
As Canadians, we all have a responsibility to right our own wrongs and act accordingly. Canada are you listening?
