Dashcam footage shows six cars driving through red stop light

Six vehicles run red light

Shocking dashcam footage sent in to Castanet shows six cars going through a red light at the intersection of Highway 97 and Daimler Road in West Kelowna on Friday morning.

Mitch Michel was waiting to go through the green light when the situation unfolded in front of him, and says he was completely shocked.

"It was a surprise the first couple after it was green and then that last one that came through like way after, that was a total shocker. Luckily I didn’t take off as soon as my green light went and I was paying attention, or she would have hit me.

"Putting other people’s lives at risk is not worth you saving that two minutes to wait for the next [green] light. There’s no point in putting someone else’s life at risk just because you want to save a couple of minutes."

All Weather Driving School owner Daryle Greenizan, who has taught driving for 20 years, says his team are out all day long seeing motorists run red lights.

He believes a lack of time management and speed control are to blame for the bad decisions people make on the roads.

"We’re in a hurry ... we drive too fast and don’t believe that we can stop, so we’re going to take that chance and run that yellow light.

"Kelowna now has red light cameras and they’re going to get caught so they have to be careful about this, but it’s not just the expense. It’s what happens is something was to happen? Our timeframe is now shot, right, so was it worth it? Could we hurt somebody? Could we hurt ourselves? People don’t think about that, they just think about ‘I’ve got to get to that destination on time, and if it’s a red light, now it’s a minute and a half I have to wait and I don’t have that time,’ so we’ve got to be careful."

If there’s any message he could give to the public, Greenizan says he would tell motorists to take their time, be patient and look around.
