Lower Similkameen Indian Band closes beach popular with tourists and outsiders, citing COVID-19 concerns

Indian Band closes beach

The Lower Similkameen Indian Band has made the decision to close the popular Chopaka Bridge beach area to non band members.

A statement from the band indicates concerns of overcrowding on the LSIB-owned land, located south of Keremeos near the United States border.

"As we get closer to the hot and dry summer months, we expect that recreational activities and social gatherings will be on the increase at the Chopaka Beach Area," the statement reads. "It is known to draw many outside people throughout the summer months."

They add that "the COVID-19 crisis has not gone away" and visitors present a "major concern" for the community.

In light of that, the beach will be for band members only.

"Our decision is based on our elected responsibility for keeping our community members safe, especially our children, elders and most vulnerable, and minimizing any threat of COVID-19 coming into our community."
