WFN enact new measures around landlord/tenancy issues

Easing COVID restrictions

As part of its reopening process amid COVID-19, Westbank First Nation has made changes to its landlord/tenancy regulations.

WFN council has rescinded the April 6 resolution that prohibited, until further notice, rent increases and notices to end tenancy.

In its place, council adopted new relief measures that will also be in place until further notice.

These measures include:

  • Rent increase notices can be served, but the enforcement of rent increases cannot occur
  • A notice to end a residential tenancy can be issued except for non-payment or late payment of rent or utilities, or non-payment of an issued monetary order
  • Landlords may apply to the Residential Premises Administrator (RPA) to end a tenancy earlier than 30 days if it would be unreasonable or unfair to the landlord/other occupants to wait, or where necessary to protect health and safety, or to prevent undue damage to the property.

In a news release, officials say council and staff will monitor the current pandemic as it relates to tenancy matters.

Tenants and landlords are encouraged to contact the WFN RPA to support greater understanding of these changes.
