Fire near Kamloops compost facility under control

Fire in mop-up stage

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m.

In its latest update, the BC Wildfire Service says the 3.2-hectare Mara Hill fire is classified as under control.

"The fire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread," the organization says on Facebook.

ORIGINAL: 9:29 a.m.

The grass fire north of the Cinnamon Ridge Compost Facility is still being held, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

"It's still 3.2 hectares in size; however, it hasn't grown since last night," fire information officer Gagan Lidhran tells Castanet.

Today, 10 BCWS members will be assisting Kamloops Fire Rescue in their efforts, she adds, noting crews are in the mop-up stage and they're putting out hot spots. They monitored the fire overnight.

"The smoke is less visible."

Lidhran says the cause of the fire is still under investigation and no structures are being threatened at this time.

She reminds the public to be mindful of wildfire season.

"With the current weather conditions, it's easy to think it's not going to happen," she says. "As we saw yesterday, it still can."
