COVID-19 cases remain relatively low in Interior

13 active cases in IH region

As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continue to rise across British Columbia, cases remain relatively low in the Interior of the province, despite a second outbreak at Okanagan Correctional Centre.

A single new case of the virus was reported in the entire Interior Health region Friday, while the rest of the province saw 83 new cases. The bulk of the new cases over the past week have come from the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal Health regions.

There are now 629 active cases of the virus across B.C., but just 13 of these are in the Interior. Two of the province's 12 virus-related hospitalizations are currently in the Interior.

Kelowna saw a surge in cases linked to several exposure events over the Canada Day long weekend last month. As of Friday, there have been 165 cases of the virus linked to Kelowna since June 26, among residents of the Interior Health region. Eight of these cases remain active.

A second outbreak of COVID-19 was declared at the Okanagan Correctional Centre Thursday, after three staff members tested positive for the virus. As of Friday afternoon, there have been no additional cases linked to the correctional facility.

The infections are believed to be linked to an off-site two-day training session, and there has been no evidence of community transmission from the cases.
