Cheapest cars to insure

Everyone loves to complain about the cost of insuring their car or truck.

But what are the cheapest vehicles to insure in Canada?

Insurance site lowestrates.ca recently pulled data from its database over the past year which shows a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT is the most affordable to insure.

Its top 10 list was based on a hypothetical driver between the ages of 30 and 49 who drives anywhere from 15,000 to 25,000 kilometres annually, and has a clean driving record.

The Dodge Journey was a whopping 43.29% less expensive than the average national premium.

The mid-size SUV debuted in 2009 and is to be discontinued after the 2020 model year.

No. 2 on the list was the 2011 Ford F-150 XLT (35.78% less expensive than the average national premium).

3. 2010 Toyota Matrix (-32.90%)

4. 2011 Chevrolet Cruze LT turbo (-28.83%)

5. 2015 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI four door (-27.89%)

6. 2006 Toyota Corolla CE (-25.94%) The oldest vehicle on the list, the Corolla is the world's best-selling vehicle. Affordable, reliable and simple.

7. 2019 Grand Caravan GT (-25.89%)

8. 2013 Ford F-150 XLT Supercrew (-24.68%) This model also made the Insurance Bureau of Canada's annual list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Alberta.

9. 2011 Dodge Caravan SE (-19.54%)

10. 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SE (-19.40%)

Insurance rates can vary widely depending on your driving record, age, gender, where you live, and payment history.

Cars with high crash-test scores, low theft ratings, and less powerful engines tend to have cheaper insurance rates. But your premium can also depend on the make, model, and even the year the vehicle was made.
