RCMP find human remains in burned-out cabin on Crown land

Body found in burned cabin

RCMP made a grisly discovery near Winter Harbour on Vancouver Island, Tuesday.

Mounties and the BC Coroner's Service are now investigating after they discovered what they believe to be human remains inside a burned-out cabin.

CTV News Vancouver Island is reporting that Port Hardy RCMP made the discovery Tuesday, but didn't release the information publicly until Friday.

Police were contacted by the caretaker of the remote cabin and they discovered what they believe to be a body at the scene.

“Preliminary findings so far have not indicated anything suspicious about this person’s death, but we will wait for an autopsy before making any final conclusions,” said Port Hardy RCMP commander Staff-Sgt. Andy Phillips in a statement Friday.

Mounties are asking anyone with any information to come forward. The body was found near Hecht Beach which is located approximately 30 kilometres from Winter Harbour.
