Hometown Furniture plagued by Facebook scammer pretending to be them, asking for credit card information

Hometown Furniture scam

Hometown Furniture, which has locations in Kelowna and Penticton in the Okanagan, has put out a public warning to customers that a fake Facebook account pretending to be them has been reaching out to customers seeking credit card numbers.

The store posted on its legitimate Facebook page Tuesday, wanting to ensure their customers had a heads up.

"It has come to our attention that a Facebook page is pretending to be us and is asking our loyal followers for their credit card information," they wrote.

"Please note that we will never ask for any personal or credit card information. We would like to thank everyone for bringing this to our attention."

The scammer, an account with a misspelled title called "Hometown Furnitur-Mattresses," has been sending friend requests to people who like and follow the actual Hometown page, telling them they have won a prize of a sofa, or a mattress in a variety of sizes.

Once the person responds, the scam account provides a link to "register" to claim the prize, which they claim is free but requires a credit card number "to receive your registration reference number," because without that, "we cannot process the prize."

Savvy Hometown customers brought the scam to the company's attention, prompting them to issue the public post on their real Facebook page.

Multiple followers began sharing their own screenshots of interactions with the scammer.

"If you have any questions, please send us a direct message," the real Hometown said.
