June is bringing the heat this week with temperatures expected to rise to 38 C by Saturday.

The Thompson-Okanagan region should expect some very hot and dry weather conditions for the next several days.

On Monday, temperatures are expected to reach 33 C all throughout the region with a mix of sun and clouds.

Tuesday will maintain the heat, rising to 34 C.

The coolest day of the week, Wednesday, will go down to 32 C in Kamloops, Penticton and Kelowna. In Vernon, temperatures will go down to 31 C.

Philippe-Alain Bergeron, meteorologist for Environment Canada, expects the hot weather to last up to 10 days.

Thursday will maintain the 32 C weather, with cloudy conditions in Kamloops.

Heading into the weekend, the region will see temperatures jump to almost 40 C.

In Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon, the mercury will hit 34 C and sunny, while Kamloops will hit a high of 36 C and sunny.

Both Saturday and Sunday will see a high of 37 C in Kelowna and Penticton with Kamloops and Vernon temperatures increasing to 38 C.

After a spout of rain showers on June 19, Bergeron says that’s not enough to combat the high risk of wildfires that this hot and dry weather could cause.

“We had significant rain in the Central Interior, but in the Thompson-Okanagan region it was only one millimetre or so, which is not enough to be of much help,” said Bergeron.

“They will be monitoring this hot and dry weather very closely in terms of combating the forest fires. …The fire index will probably be rising as well.”
