Kelowna International Airport offering more Canadian flights than prior to the pandemic

Air travel roaring back to life

Before the pandemic there were nine destinations, now there are 16 Canadian cities you can fly to from Kelowna International Airport.

The easing of COVID-19 travel restrictions has opened the door to travel within the country, and it's proving popular. On Sunday, Swoop launched a four-times-a-week service between Kelowna and Hamilton.

"We've been planning for some time," said Sam Samaddar, Airport Director. "The key for us is the air service component and obviously getting that air service back, but it's a level playing field for every airport and community in the country. So our teams have done a great job of trying to get air service back to Kelowna and we've got more air service post-COVID than we had pre-COVID."

Samaddar believes the airport has enough staff. "We are continuing to ramp up based on the flight schedules that we have, and the key for us is going to be demand. You know, are people going to feel safe enough to get in the air and fly."

YLW currently has no international flights, but Samaddar is hopeful destinations they had in the past like Mexico and Cuba, will be returning when Canadians are more comfortable travelling outside the country.

The federal government announced Monday that quarantine requirements would be lifting for fully vaccinated Canadians returning to the country on July 5.
