Veteran goaltender Roman Basran is a free agent after being released by the Rockets

Rockets release Basran

Goaltender Roman Basran was a victim of the numbers game.

Basran was given his outright release Thursday when he was unclaimed after being placed on waivers.

The overage goaltender is now able to sign with any of the other 21 WHL teams.

Basran was one of six overage players on the Kelowna roster. Teams are only able to carry three in season, meaning at least two other 20-year-olds will have to be moved.

Goaltender Cole Schwebius, defencemen Tyson Feist and Jake Lee and forwards Alex Swetlikoff and Mark Liwiski are the remaining overage players on the Kelowna roster.

Basran appeared in eight games during the abbreviated 2020-2021 season, posting a 4-2-1-0 record.

In 120 games over four seasons, the former third round bantam selection amassed a 52-41-7-4 record with a 2.90 goals against average and five shutouts.
