Spallumcheen lifts campfire ban, open burning still prohibited

Campfire bans lifted

UPDATE 1 p.m.

Armstrong and the Regional District of North Okanagan have also lifted campfire bans for the region.

ORIGINAL 10:19 a.m.

Spallumcheen residents will now be able to fend off the chill of the approaching fall next to a campfire.

Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Chief Ian Cummings recommended the township lift its campfire ban Thursday.

The ban had been in place since June 30.

“The cooler temperatures and increased precipitation have reduced the fire risk in our area. While campfires will be allowed, open burning remains prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns and burn barrels. Please exercise caution while enjoying your campfire in a safe and responsible manner,” says Cummings.

The use of fireworks is only permitted within the township in the last week of October, but officials note fireworks can have an adverse effect on animals.

“It has been shown that the noise of fireworks makes animals visibly nervous and can cause animals to flee their homes to try and avoid the noise. Please be considerate of neighbours with animals and use extreme caution when planning to use fireworks,” the township said in a press release.
