Suspect sought in North Vancouver hit and run on highway patrol cruiser

Hit and run on cop cruiser

The RCMP’s BC Highway Patrol is looking for a hit-and-run driver who sideswiped one of their cruisers in North Vancouver and sped off.

The incident happened about 9:20 p.m. Aug. 30, near the Highway 1 eastbound off-ramp for Mountain Highway.

The officer had stopped another driver when someone driving a 2016 or newer white Honda HRV clipped the cruiser and continued on in the direction of the Second Narrows bridge.

No one was hurt in the incident, but both vehicles were damaged. The suspect vehicle lost its passenger side mirror in the collision, which police recovered at the scene. The driver did tap their brakes, following the sideswipe, suggesting they knew they hit something, said Cpl. Mike Halskov.

“Any time we pull somebody over on the side of the highway, there's risk involved - risk to the police officers and risk to the person that we're pulling over,” he said. “We really want motorists to take caution when they see emergency vehicles on the side of the road, to make sure they slow down over and give us a room to do our job.”

“Leaving the scene is subject to a $360 ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act plus three points, and depending on the circumstances, it can even rise to the to the Criminal Code level for more egregious types of incidents,” Halskov said.
