Miners trapped underground

Rescue efforts are underway to save 39 people trapped underground at a mine in Sudbury, Ontario.

A tweet from Ontario Premier Doug Ford expresses concern and sympathy for the workers trapped at Vale's Totten Mine in Sudbury, Ont.

CTV News has learned that the workers have been trapped underground since Sunday. Nick Larochelle, president of Steelworkers Local 6500, says the miners went underground Sunday at 7 a.m. but an incident occurred at 11:30 a.m., that damaged the shaft leaving them stuck.

Rescue crews are on-site working to free the people, there are no injuries at this time and food and medication has been sent to the miners.

Totten Mine produces nickel, copper and other precious metals, the main shaft of the mine is 4,130 feet below the surface.
