British council chiefs are terrified that children as young as six are emulating dangerous stunts featured on hit Netflix series Squid Game.
The South Korean show, in which cash-strapped contestants take part in deadly adult versions of children's playground games to pay off their debts, has become the streaming platform's most-watched series ever, beating out period drama Bridgerton last week with 111 million global views.
And now councilors in Bedfordshire, England are warning parents their kids could be accessing inappropriate screen content, either by watching the adult series online or seeing videos inspired by its sometimes gruesome challenges on video-sharing site TikTok - and they're worried youngsters could harm themselves as a result of trying the grown-up stunts.
An email from Central Bedfordshire Council officials, obtained by the Guardian, reads: "There have been some concerning reports recently about children and young people 'playing' Squid Game whilst at school. Squid Game is also being viewed via other platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, and given the popularity of the games in the show, developers have made various mini-games based on Squid Game on Roblox and other gaming platforms.
"We strongly advise that children should not watch Squid Game. The show is quite graphic with a lot of violent content."
Gareth Nichols, head teacher of Sir Francis Hill primary school in Lincoln, England, told the BBC a small group of pupils, aged around six, were "re-enacting some scenes" from the show, and he "immediately contacted" parents to let them know, advising them to "check settings on their devices as pupils may be accessing and viewing this show without their parents' knowledge."
Netflix officials have yet to comment on the warnings.
