Contents found inside the fire-damaged garage indicate someone was living inside

Garage fire quickly put out

Fire crews in Kelowna were called to put out a garage fire on Saturday afternoon, and it appears someone may have been using it for shelter.

At around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, the Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Center received several 9-1-1 calls in regards to a garage on fire in the 1800 block of Chandler Avenue.

The first officer on scene reported a single detached garage and lean to had visible flames and smoke shooting from the structure.

Crews entered the garage and quickly extinguished the fire. The home on the property has fortunately been vacant for some time.

The contents discovered inside the garage indicated someone was using it for shelter.The fire was contained to the garage with no extension to surrounding property. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and will be investigated by RCMP and KFD investigators.

KFD sent out 3 engines, a rescue unit and a command vehicle. RCMP and By-Law also attended.
