Vancouver Canucks hire new general manager

The Vancouver Canucks have a new general manager.

The organizations has announced the hiring of former Pittsburgh Penguins assistant manager Patrik Allvin.

Allvin has won the Stanley Cup as a manager three times in his 16 years with the Penguins and he becomes the 12th GM in Canucks history, taking over for Jim Benning, who was fired in late 2021.

"I am pleased to welcome Patrik and his family to Vancouver," said Vancouver Canucks President, hockey operations, Jim Rutherford. "Patrik and I worked together for seven years, and I believe he will be an excellent General Manager. He has won three Stanley Cups and has experience at all levels of hockey operations. He is intelligent, works hard, makes strong decisions and I believe he will help us build a winning team in Vancouver."

Allvin's most recent role with the Penguins involved all aspects of hockey operations and he was responsible for the Penguins' amateur scouting efforts in North America and Europe.

"I am grateful and humbled for this opportunity and want to thank Jim and the Aquilini family for their belief in me," said Allvin. "Leading an NHL team in Canada is an honour and building a championship team in Vancouver is our goal. Jim has assembled a diverse and talented hockey operations group in Vancouver, and I look forward to working closely with all of them as we build a team that fans will be proud of and will ultimately compete again for a Stanley Cup."

Allvin is a native of Leksand, Sweden who broke into NHL management as a European scout for the Montreal Canadiens from 2002-06. He also played professionally for nine years as a defenceman with various leagues in North America and Europe.
