City of Vernon crews monitoring creeks as severe thunderstorm watch and high streamflow advisory issued

Storm-watch eye on creeks

City of Vernon crews are monitoring local creeks as a severe thunderstorm watch and high streamflow advisory converge on the North Okanagan.

The forecast for Vernon is calling for approximately 5 to 10 millimetres of rain today, with a chance of showers and risk of thunderstorms carrying into Wednesday.

City staff are keeping a close eye on BX and Vernon creeks.

"Crews report the water level on Upper BX creek has started to drop over the last week. The outflow from Kalamalka Lake into Vernon Creek has increased slightly in the last couple weeks, however, capacity remains available," the city says.

Residents are reminded to remain cautious near creeks as spring freshet and rains swell waterways.

"Sudden or prolonged rain events can increase water flow and water levels quickly, and potentially unexpectedly, so everyone is encouraged to stay away from creek banks and to be aware of possible hazards."

Property owners adjacent to creeks and streams are urged to consider whether they are prepared for rising water levels and what steps they may need to take to protect their property.

Sand and sandbags are available at the City of Vernon operations building Pleasant Valley Road gate. Bring your own shovel.
