WestJet apologizes for privacy breach on its app

WestJet updates breach

WestJet has released more information on a privacy breach on its website and the WestJet app Wednesday.

Several people took to social media to report that when they logged in to their accounts, they instead saw the personal information of other account holders.

One post on Twitter claimed to be from Cassandra Keogh, one of the customers whose information may have been leaked.

In a statement posted on its website Thursday the airline says that on August 17, 2022, at 3:53 p.m. MST, a technical issue was identified that impacted guest profiles on westjet.com and the WestJet App and that the issue was resolved at 4:27 p.m. MST.

WestJet says the impact was limited to only guest profiles logged in at the time, and its initial investigation identified that less than 0.05 per cent of total user profiles were impacted.

“We can confirm that information such as passwords, credit card numbers and passport details were not exposed,” read the statement.

The company blames an internal technology change for the technical issue and says teams worked quickly to resolve the problem.

“With the issue resolved, we are working through a full investigation and will take appropriate follow up actions as required, including contacting impacted guests.”

Some impacted WestJet clients have suggested they will be filing complaints with the privacy commissioner.
