Kelowna RCMP warning public of multiple drug overdoses, with loss of five lives in the last nine hours

5 lost to overdose in 9 hours

Three calls for drug overdoses, resulting in the loss of five lives in the last nine hours have Kelowna and West Kelowna RCMP warning the public to practice safe usage on Saturday.

According to a press release from the police on Saturday afternoon, officers were first called to the scene of an overdose by BC Ambulance service at 8:13 a.m.

Officers attended to the 800 Blk of Saucier Avenue and said they observed signs of drug use, and found a 32-year-old Kelowna Man deceased in his bed.

After the first scene, officers in Kelowna and West Kelowna attended two more, coming across five deaths in total.

“Overdose deaths are preventable, and we have the tools we need to stop people from dying from drugs,” Cst. Mike Della-Paolera, Kelowna RCMP Media Relations Officer said in the press release.

Options to practice safe usage include:

  • Be prepared by using a supervised consumption site
  • Do not use alone; make a plan and use a buddy system
  • Test it before you ingest it
  • Carry Naloxone, a critical tool that reverses an overdose, should be accessible to everyone.
  • Spread awareness to keep people safe

Overdose Prevention or Harm Reduction site can be found in Kelowna at:

  • Living Positive Resource Centre, 255 Lawrence Avenue, Mon-Fri, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Interior Health OPS, 1649 Pandosy Street, seven days/week, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
