Sun clinch BCFC title

For the first time since 2018, the Okanagan Sun have secured top spot in the BC Football Conference, and for the first time since 2015, have a chance to secure a perfect regular season.

The Sun clinched the regular season title in convincing fashion Saturday, improving to 8-0 with a 42-10 dismantling of the reigning national champion Langley Rams.

"It means everything," said head coach Travis Miller of clinching the regular season title.

"This is the team that has ended our season the last three years, and to have the opportunity to put up a number of points on them is always a special moment for this organization.

'They are a classy organization and they have some good coaches and players, but there is always that rivalry and it's always good to come out on that other side."

While the Sun clinched a league title, the loss drops the Rams to 4-5, almost assuring them of another trip to the Okanagan in the opening round of the playoffs.

"That's a big thing for us, making sure we got the win today and that they have to think about it for the next three weeks until they come back to Kelowna."

The Sun did most of their damage on the ground, thanks mainly to leading rusher Jevan Garwood. The league's number two rusher shredded the Rams defence for 164 yards on just11 carries.

The first of those, after the Sun elected to take the ball on the 35 following a conceded safety, went for 75 yards and the first of his two majors on the days.

"He's picked up where Malcolm Miller left off last year, and is carrying this offence when we need him the most.

"It's nice having him and all of our receivers and quarterback as they really work well together."

Miller said the touchdown run, that put the Sun up 9-0 was a simple zone play that worked the way it was drawn up.

After the teams traded safeties, Dominic Britton went to work.

Two plays after a two yard punt gave the Sun the ball on the Rams 46, Britton hit Noah Bymak with a 13-yard strike.

He hooked up with Mike O'Shea from 16 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to put the Sun up 25-2.

The score came immediately after Romereo Reid pounced on a fumble at the Rams 16.

Liam Attwood put the Sun up by 26 with a 22 yard field goal before the half ended, then it was the offences turn again early in the third.

An Isaac Matity interception set the offence up at the Rams 15. Two plays later, Garwood capped off the drive with a one-yard plunge.

Tristan Peddle closed out the Sun scoring with a one-yard run, after he was denied following a 23-yard scamper the play before.

With the Sun starters on the bench, the Rams moved the ball in the final quarter, scoring one touchdown to make the final score a little more respectable.

After failing to create any turnovers in a 20-7 win over the Rams earlier in the season, the defence was at its ball-hawking best Saturday, led by Garret Cape's two interceptions.

"People haven't been testing him all year and they finally took some shots in his direction, and he made some plays on balls each time he had the opportunity," said Miller.

The Sun will close out the season on the road in Kamloops and Prince George before hosting one of two BCFC semi finals Oct. 15.
