2 parks open to dogs this winter in Lake Country

More dog parks this winter

Dog owners have a chance to visit two regional parks in Lake Country that normally don't allow dogs.

From now until the end of March, the Regional District will be conducting pilot projects for another year in Kopje Regional Park and Kaloya Regional Park.

According to the Regional District of Central Okanagan, dogs are allowed off-leash in Kopje and on-leash on trails within the Kaloya Park, but will not be allowed on the beach or playground of either park.

This will give dog owners more options during the slow months of the year and will include an opportunity for feedback in early 2023.

"We're pleased to offer this opportunity for dog owners once again, and especially the chance for people to provide comments and feedback about their experience in the two parks," said parks services director Murray Kopp.

"Visitors will see increased signage about the pilot project regulations, dog-bag dispensers and waste containers. We encourage dog owners to follow the regulations, including picking up after their pet as this will impact our ability to offer increased access in the future."

This project follows up on a similar trial in the two parks that happened last year between the months of October and March.

Visitors are advised that neither parking lot is maintained and that the entrance gate at Kopje Regional Park is closed from November 1 to the end of March. Ensure that you park along the shoulder and off the travelled portion of Carrs Landing Road. Don’t block or park in front of the main gates because RDCO staff still need access.

As part of the pilot projects, residents will have a chance to provide feedback next year, including in-person gatherings with RDCO Parks staff and volunteers. You can also fill out an online survey at yoursay.rdco.com.

Anyone interested in volunteer opportunities with the dog park pilot projects should contact Parks Services Volunteer in Parks program coordinator Sheelah Rodriguez or visit the program webpage.
