Police find potential weapon at drag protest

Weapon found at protest

Kelowna RCMP confirm that a potential weapon was seized on Saturday during protests held over drag story time.

Hundreds gathered outside the Kelowna Regional Library Saturday afternoon. Most were in support of the event, while several were not.

Drag performer Freida Whales signed up as a community reader which is a program open for those who wish to read to children in the library.

Kelowna RCMP Const. Mike Della-Paolera confirms with Castanet a hard set of plastic knuckles were seized, but no charges were laid.

"They do not fall into the category of a prohibited weapon, although they are a weapon if used as such and can have very devastating results if used."

"No idea which side of the protest the male who was in possession of them was on," Della-Paolera said.

However, video shared on social media and with Castanet show officers taking the knuckles off an anti-drag demonstrator.

RCMP were on hand outside the library during the opposing rallies, which stayed peaceful.
