Cannabis prize pack won by child at Dawson Creek tournament

Pot prize pack won by child

An eight year old boy was disappointed to learn that the $200 prize pack he won at a Dawson Creek hockey tournament contained cannabis, and he wouldn't be able to enjoy his winnings.

CTV New reports the young boy was attending the Dawson Creek Minor Hockey tournament this past weekend when his father gave him $10 worth of raffle tickets, to bid on different prize packages.

“All he saw was like chocolate and chocolate fondue and he put a ticket in this bag,” the boy's grandfather Keith Redl told CTV News.

Unfortunately for the young hockey player, while his raffle ticket was chosen, the prize turned out to be $200 worth of cannabis products.

“My grandson thought he won a great prize,” Redl said. “‘Dad, I won chocolate!’ ‘No, son, there’s bad drugs in the chocolate.’ How do you explain that to a kid?”

A photo of the prize pack shows assorted chocolate edibles and other pot products, with the red, octagonal THC symbol on all the packages.

In a statement, the Dawson Creek Minor Hockey Association said the basket was clearly marked for adults only, and the cannabis was not out in the open near the kids, just a photo.

“The raffle winner was told the basket contained cannabis products and was given the option of not accepting the prize,” the statement said, referring to Redl’s adult son, who had picked up the prize.

“The winner chose to take the prize, their identification was checked to ensure they were of legal age (19+), and the donor then delivered the basket to the winners.

“It was not our intention to upset any of the attendees at the event ... The tournament is organized by volunteers and their objective is to have a fun tournament and raise money for DCMHA to allow hockey to be more affordable and more inclusive.”
