Avalanche victim's body found near Chetwynd

Body found 4 months later

A man’s body has been found more than four months after an avalanche presumably buried him.

North District RCMP say an article of clothing was discovered on Thursday in the same area south of Chetwynd where the missing 31-year-old’s snowmobile was found in early February, and police were able to find the body.

On Feb. 8, Search and Rescue groups from across the region suspended their search for the Fort St. John resident, initially starting in the Murray Mountain range between Mt. Hunter and Milburn Peak, south of Pine Le Moray Provincial Park.

However, North Peace SAR conducted regular searches by air and on the ground, eventually finding the sled the missing man was using before the incident.

“The man had been covered in deep snow, and the warmer weather and melting conditions, allowed us to find him,” said acting Sgt. Jo Anne Ruppenthal of the Chetwynd RCMP.

Volunteers were called in from Prince George, Tumbler Ridge, Fort St. John and Chetwynd before the suspension.

The BC Coroners Service has since taken over the investigation.
