Numerous fires break out in Southeast district after lightning storm

Multiple lightning-caused wildfires have broken out in the Southeast Fire Centre in the past 48 hours.

This weekend's lightning storm has sparked ignition zones in the Arrow, Boundary, Columbia and Cranbrook areas.

"With these thunderstorm cells carrying minimal rain, it is expected that more fires will be discovered over the morning hours," says Kim Wright, Fire Information Officer for BC Wildfire Service. "While there are currently no fires of note, the BC Wildfire Service ground crews and air support are responding to four fires that are visible from the Revelstoke area, located either on or near Mount Begbie."

BC Wildfire Service is reporting that the largest of these fires is estimated at 0.1 hectares in size while multiple crews are on the scene with air support. Fire teams are also tending to the Burton Creek wildfire, which is located about 35 kilometres south of Nakusp. That fire is also estimated to be approximately 0.1 hectares with airtankers and rappel squads present.

"The BC Wildfire Service was aware of the possibility of dry thunderstorm conditions over the weekend, and in response to the anticipated weather patterns, additional crews and resources were strategically placed on standby throughout the Southeast Fire Centre to ensure rapid response capabilities," says Wright. "While zones throughout the Southeast are well-resourced and have crews available, the BC Wildfire Service asks that all campfire use is done responsibly, ensuring that crews and resources are not unnecessarily deferred onto human-caused fires."
