BC announces 2,077 new COVID-19 cases, 212 in the IH region

2,077 new cases, 46 deaths

B.C. has recorded the largest death toll related to the COVID-19 pandemic over the weekend.

During her Monday update, an emotional Dr. Bonnie Henry said 46 people died from the virus over the weekend.

She said about 80 per cent of those resided within long-term care homes.

"This reflects the challenges we have in dealing with the virus in our communities," she said.

"It can cause such devastation when it gets into our care homes."

Thirty-five of those died within Fraser Health, while 11 passed away in the Coastal Health Region. There have now been 441 deaths related to COVID-19 in the province.

Over the weekend Henry says 2,077 new cases were detected, including 212 new cases within Interior Health. An additional 277 historical cases in the Lower Mainland were also added on Monday, bringing the total number of cases added to the provincial total on Monday to 2,364.

That brings the number of positive cases recorded since the pandemic was declared to 33,238.

At the moment, there are 8,855 active cases, including 316 who are in hospital and 75 in intensive care.

Another 10,139 are self-monitoring at home while 23,111 people have recovered.

Five new health care outbreaks have been declared, including one in Kelowna, while two have been declared over.

Henry says 57 outbreaks remain active in long-term care facilities and five in acute care facilities.

In all, 847 residents and 487 staff have tested positive within long-term care centres.

A new community outbreak has also been declared at Newton Elementary school. That school has been closed for two weeks as a result.
