Prince George Search and Rescue help find stranded snowmobilers near Likely

Third search this week

For a third time this week, avalanche safety searchers were called in from Prince George to help find stranded backcountry adventurers.

Two snowmobilers were recovering Thursday after spending the night near Likely’s Yanks Peak after they were left stranded.

Search and Rescue teams from Prince George, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House were called in and eventually found the pair by helicopter around mid-day Wednesday.

According to a social media post, crews were able to ski to the area where the snowmobilers were stranded and "got them out via snowshoe."

“The Avalanche Safety Officer looks at considerations such as snowpack, weather and also tests the snow in the rescue area,” Central Cariboo Search and Rescue says.

“These very important steps are done to ensure the safety of everyone responding and those we are looking for/rescuing.”

Earlier this week, a snowmobiler from Dawson Creek was found dead near Powder King and Bijoux Falls north of Prince George after he was buried in an avalanche.

Search and Rescue crews are asking regional residents to take all safety precautions if choosing to go out on the mountains and into the backcountry.
