Police dog killed in line of duty, officer stabbed, suspect shot dead

Suspect, police dog dead

A man and RCMP police dog are dead after a police incident near Campbell River, B.C.

Police say the incident happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday, after an officer from the Campbell River RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle in relation to an outstanding warrant. Initial reports indicate the vehicle refused to stop and then fled the area.

The suspect vehicle was located a short time later in the 2000 block of the South Island Highway in Campbell River. RCMP say an officer boxed in the vehicle and a confrontation ensued between the suspect, police officer and police service dog.

After the dust settled, the police service dog was stabbed and killed, the suspect was shot dead, and officer was treated for knife wounds.

The Independent Investigations Office, B.C.'s police watchdog, is now investigating.

"Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police," states a news release from the BC RCMP.
