Heavy rains fell across the Lower Mainland Friday night

A tree fell overnight in Vancouver's West End.

A storm of massive proportions battered the Lower Mainland Friday night, knocking down trees and causing power outages.

According to BC Hydro's outages map, crews are working to restore power to hundreds of customers in the region.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver estimating rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 mm and at the same time calling for winds gusting to 80 km/h. Vancouver Weather Records reported that by 5 p.m. it had rained a total of 39.3 mm making it Vancouver's wettest Sept. 17 since records began in 1900.

Reports on social media also show a tree plucked from its foundations and laid across a sidewalk between Gilford and Denman Streets. Five years earlier another tree was uprooted by strong winds in the same area and hit a nearby apartment building.

While Vancouverites are reaching for their umbrellas, skiers and snowboarders are casting their eyes to the mountains as snow cameras at Whistler Blackcomb show a decent dump of the white stuff.
