Actor who played James T. Kirk has message for Premier John Horgan

'Live long and prosper'

As Canadian actor, William Shatner prepares for his first ride in space, he has some down-to-earth comments for B.C. Premier John Horgan.

Horgan has indicated he is a big Star Trek fan so it may come as a disappointment that the man who played Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek says Horgan should do more to protect B.C.'s old-growth forests.

“Premier Horgan, these forests should live long and prosper,” Shatner said.

CTV News Vancouver is reporting that Torrance Coste, a campaigner with the Wilderness Committee says Shatner is supporting an open-letter initiative launched by environmental non-profit, Canopy back in June of 2021.

“There's nothing like standing next to a giant ancient cedar to make one recognize how small our place in the universe really is. Some wonders are irreplaceable,” said Shatner.

“Horgan should listen to one of his apparent heroes and go where no premier has gone before,” Coste said.

Shatner is throwing his 'star power' behind the movement to bring pressure to bear on the fate of old-growth forests.

Former NASA scientist James Hansen, actor Judi Dench, primatologist Jane Goodall, former federal environment minister Catherine McKenna, and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip are just some signatories to the open letter sent directly to Horgan urging him to protect at-risk old-growth forests as a shield against the climate crisis.
