Conditions stable at Nohomin Creek wildfire near Lytton

Conditions stable at fire

In the absence of wind, despite hot and dry conditions, fire activity is currently stable at the Nohomin Creek wildfire northwest of Lytton.

The BC Wildfire Service says temperatures are forecast to reach 41 C today, further reducing humidity, potentially leading to increased fire behaviour at high elevations in the Stein Valley over coming days.

Growth continues to occur upslope along the west section of the fire, north of the Stein River, where crews are working to establish wet lines and fuel-free areas.

Crews are also patrolling the Stryen Creek area and are working to extinguish remaining hot spots.

Patrolling continues in the area of a spot fire Tuesday on the south side of the Stein River, but it was contained by ground crews and aircraft.

On the fire's east flank, adjacent to the Fraser River, Lytton First Nation and BCWS crews continue to mop up any remaining hot spots identified by infrared scanning.

Meanwhile, on the north flank, crews continue to make progress in establishing containment lines. The north flank is stable and there is minimal growth east of Stein Valley, BCWS says.

Crews also continue to establish containment lines on the south flank.

BC Hydro personnel have been working to restore power to properties along the west side of the Fraser River.

The wildfire service notes operation of any aircraft not associated with fire suppression activities (including drones) near the wildfire is illegal and poses a threat to the safety of firefighting personnel.

The restricted airspace includes a radius of five nautical miles around the fire to an altitude of 3,000 feet.

The fire remains classified as out of control and is estimated to have burned 2,364 hectares.
