Charges laid against man accused in machete attack in downtown Vancouver SRO

Charges after machete attack

A man is facing three charges following violent attacks at an SRO in Vancouver's Granville Street entertainment district this weekend.

"Ibrahim Abdela Bakhit, 48, has been charged with one count each of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose," states the Vancouver Police Department in a press release.

The attack occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday, August, 6 in a rooming house, or single occupancy room hotel (SRO), near Granville and Smithe streets.

Police previously stated they were called to the scene by firefighters who had arrived to put out a fire in the SRO. When police arrived they were confronted by a man wielding a weapon; the conflict ended when police shot and wounded him.

The suspect was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Before police arrived it's alleged the suspect lit his suite at the SRO on fire before attacking four other people with a machete and stabbing them. Police say the four have life-altering injuries as a result.

Bakhit is in police custody at this time.
