Golfer killed by falling tree in the Kootenays

Falling tree kills golfer

A man is dead after a large tree fell on him while he was golfing in the Kootenays.

Police say they were called on August 7 at 3:18 p.m. for a report of a sudden death at a golf course in Rossland, B.C.

The man was golfing with three friends when a 100-foot tree suddenly crashed down onto him. He tried to avoid the falling tree, but was unsuccessful and likely sustained immediate life-threatening injuries.

A staff member of the golf course attempted CPR and attempted resuscitation with an electronic medical device. Fire crews and paramedics quickly arrived and took over, but were unable to revive him.

The Castlegar News has identified the man as 73-year old Robert Archambault, a well-known member of the local golfing community. The incident happened at the Redstone Resort golf course.

“This sudden and tragic incident is a shock to family, friends, and communities, and undoubtedly will leave some in a challenging emotional state with many unanswered questions,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich, offering RCMP victim services to anyone who needs it.

“We would like to thank everyone at the scene of the incident for their quick response and for doing everything possible to provide emergency care.”

The BC Coroners Service has now taken over the investigation.
