Vees power past Silverbacks

The Penticton Vees scored three times on the power-play, including two from Wade Murphy, as they topped the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 3-2 in BCHL action Friday night.

The win is the Vees 11th in 14 games and seventh away from the SOEC.

For only the sixth time in 14 games Penticton would open the scoring when Dexter Dancs' pass attempt deflected off of a Salmon Arm defender and past Colin Dzijacky at 10:51.

Despite firing 16 shots at the Silverbacks, Penticton would only score once in the opening 20 minutes.

After a scoreless second period, Salmon Arm ran into penalty trouble early in the third period and the Vees power-play pounced.

Wade Murphy scored his first of two power play goals in the third when he walked in off the right-wall and wired a shot short-side past Dzijacky at 3:18.

Later, Sean Flanagan was assessed a five-minute major for charging, putting the Vees on a five-on-three.

During the two-man advantage, Murphy put a rolling puck under Dzijacky’s arm at 6:33 for his eighth of the year.

Salmon Arm made things interesting late in the third, scoring two goals in 26 seconds to cut the deficit to one.

Their first came from Jeff Kennedy, credited for a deflection that eluded Chad Katunar at 15:32. Harlon Orr scored his first BCHL goal on the very next shift to make it a one-goal game at 15:58.

Penticton finished the game 3 for 5 on the power-play

With his two goals, Wade Murphy extended his BCHL best point-streak to 12 games.

The Vees now have a home-and-home next week with the West Kelowna Warriors.

Penticton plays in West Kelowna on Tuesday morning, as part of a special “School Day” promotion; face-off is 11am. The return leg is at the SOEC on October 26.
