For only the second time in 36 games, the Penticton Vees were defeated at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Leo Fitzgerald scored in double-overtime, as the Victoria Grizzlies downed the Vees 3-2 Saturday night. Both of those losses have come in overtime.
With the win, the Grizzlies sweep the two-game season series.
Leo’s brother Myles scored the double-overtime winner back on October 12th in Victoria, as the Grizzlies upended the Vees by an identical 3-2 score.
The loss snapped Penticton's three game win streak but the single point gives them a six point lead over Merritt in the Interior Division standings. The Centennials have two games in hand.
Former Grizzly Wade Murphy opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game when he rifled a shot over the glove of Michael Stiliadis.
Mitch Meek tied the game near the midway mark of the first when his point shot found its way through traffic and squirted through the arm of Chad Katunar at 8:22 for his first career BCHL goal.
In a tight-checking second, Jordan McCallum scored the only goal on a partial breakaway, slipping the puck through the outstretched arm of Stiliadis at 6:39.
Early in the third period the Grizzlies tied it again after Katunar misplayed the puck, allowing Brett Hartskamp to stuff it home at the 36 second mark.
The two teams needed double-overtime to finally decide it.
Myles Fitzgerald was stopped on a wrap-around but his brother Leo potted the rebound to give the Grizzlies the extra point and their second win over the Vees at 2:02 of the fifth period.
Brad McClure was hurt in the third period and did not return. As a result the Vees were down to 10 forwards for the rest of the period and two overtimes.
Louie Nanne and Cam Amantea did not dress for the Vees due to injury.
Chad Katunar, Troy Stecher, James De Haas, Dexter Dancs, Mike Rebry and Wade Murphy all left on Sunday for the Team Canada West selection camp in Calgary.
The six are battling for spots on Canada West’s roster for the 2012 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge.
Penticton is off until next Saturday, November 3, when they host the Chilliwack Chiefs at the SOEC.
