I was wondering about the legality of turning left across solid or double lines? Cooper Rd between Harvey and Enterprise is the area in question. Drivers headed NB on Cooper often tie up traffic to enter the Cooper Centre. Occasionally this leaves traffic stopped in the Cooper and Harvey Intersection, a seemingly dangerous situation. Can a driver make a left turn across a solid line?

Answer From Dear Cop
When a driver is causing a vehicle to enter or leave a highway, roadway or street, the driver must ascertain that he or she can do so safely and does so without unreasonably affecting the travel of another vehicle. You are permitted to make a left turn over a single or double solid line provided that you do not impede traffic behind your vehicle. Failure to comply with this law carries a fine $109 and 2 points.
