Governor General Recovering

  • Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, 66, is resting after undergoing a successful operation to install a pacemaker. Clarkson was unexpectedly admitted to a Toronto hospital on Friday after doctors detected a slow heartbeat during a routine appointment. "The Governor General is resting comfortably," said her press secretary Randy Mylyk on Saturday. "She's doing well and is expected to recover fully within weeks."Full Story

  • Fans trying to enter the first full day of the Calgary Stampede had to run a gauntlet of animal rights protesters who accused organizers of animal cruelty. Demonstrators laid wreaths in front of mock animal graves and carried signs displaying how many animals have died over the 100-year history of the Stampede. Last weekend nine horses drowned near the end of a 200-kilometre trail ride held as part of the city's famed Stampede. And it wasn't the first such tragedy in Stampede history.Full Story

  • The U.S. government expects to be successful next week in overturning a lower court ruling that has delayed its plans to reopen the border to live Canadian cattle. U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said Saturday that the four month-old injunction preventing the border from reopening was "ill considered" and not based on scientific facts.Full Story

  • A former top Canadian security official says the country needs to do more to prepare for the kind of attack that killed at least 49 people in London on Thursday. "Nobody is invulnerable," Reid Morden, a former head of Canada's Security Intelligence Service said Saturday. Attacks like the one on London's public transit system cannot be completely prevented, he said, but Canadian governments should be telling people that such attacks are possible.Full Story
