Shatner's not your father

A man who claimed to be William Shatner's long-lost son has discovered the Star Trek legend isn't his dad after all.

Peter Sloan, who legally changed his surname to Shatner last year, had claimed the actor had fathered him with late Canadian actress Kathy McNeil after a one-night-stand in 1956.

Shatner has always denied the allegation, and steadfastly refused a DNA test - despite Sloan hitting him with a $170 million lawsuit in a bid to force him to take a test.

However, after uploading his own DNA to genealogy site Ancestry.com, Sloan discovered the identity of his dad was actually a Canadian man named Benjamin 'Chick' Freedman, who died in 2001.

According to a report in the Tampa Bay Times newspaper, the discovery was made after Chick's daughter agreed to a DNA test in October, with the results showing that she and Sloan were half-siblings.

Sloan told the publication, while he's relieved to have finally discovered who his dad was, he's upset that it's too late for them to have forged a bond.

"I will never have the opportunity to sit and talk to him," Peter said. "I just wanted to know where I came from. I found what I was looking for. It took time and it was a fight, but I did it. I finally know where I come from."

He's now planning to revert his surname, most probably back to Sloan.

Shatner has adult daughters from his first marriage to Gloria Rand. They divorced in 1969, and he has since been married to Marcy Lafferty, from 1973 to 1996, and Nerine Kidd Shatner, from 1997 until her death in 1999.

He tied the knot with current wife Elizabeth Anderson Martin in 2001.
